Porn sites must be blocked by a National level backbone filtering system

New Delhi 2 Sep : Students Islamic Organisation of India has urged the Government to introduce a national level backbone-filtering system to block all vulgar and obscene information.

''The need of the hour is to introduce a National level backbone-filtering system to block all vulgar and obscene information,'' said the organisation's National Public Relations Secretary Suhail K.K. He was addressing the public at Jantar Mantar here Saturday on the eve of one-day campaign against digital evils and crimes.

''Countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Tunisia, Yemen and Sudan all use commercial filtering products. With the rise of technology, communication, knowledge transfer and relations between people became very easy and effective. On the other hand, it has led to the spread of vulgarity and obscenity on a mass scale,'' he added.

The SIO leader further said, ''Pornographic sites and TV channels, illegal morphing, hacking, vulgar SMS, vulgar multi media messaging by mobiles, cyber stalking, cyber scouting, data diddling, Trojan attack, cyber cheating, e pick pocketing, viruses, worms, web jacking, other e mail related crimes etc lead to insecurity and immorality of all sorts. It was in this scenario that SIO of India decided to conduct this campaign.

''The Cinematographic Act and the Cable Television Network Act give extensive powers to the Censor Board to discipline and take action against channels that broadcast programmes with adult content. The channels need to be regulated under the law.''
Speaking on the occasion, SIO Delhi Zone organiser Adnan Yusuf said, ''SIO strongly demands from the Government to create/modify cyber related laws in order to check the cyber evils and crimes more effectively. The Government should introduce new effective legislation to control unethical practices of cyber cafes. The Government should come forward with mass awareness programmes for healthier and creative use of Internet, among students and youth.''
