Condition of Muslims in India worse than SC, STs: UK scholar

Aligarh: Muslims in India are even less privileged than members of scheduled caste and scheduled tribes as they enjoy neither equity nor equality of opportunity, a noted British scholar claimed here on Monday.

Delivering Sir Syed Memorial Lecture at Aligarh Muslim University here, Gordon Campbell, Professor of Renaissance Studies at Leicester University in UK, claimed that the condition of Muslims, especially in the field of education, had worsened “in the seven years since the Sachar Committee Report was published”.

“Muslims have been marginalised and have limited access in the field of mainstream education and public sector employment in the country,” said Campbell, who is also the founding Chairman of the Consortium of British Universities in Saudi Arabia.

He, however, lauded some recent initiatives in the sphere of education of Muslims, particularly AMU’s decision “to establish centres of higher education in minority dominated areas of the country including Malappuram and Murshidabad”.

He said, the establishment of these centres was a “bold initiative” taken by the university.

Referring to the policies followed by AMU’s founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, Campbell said some people attribute origins of the two nation theory, which ultimately led to the creation of Pakistan, to him.

He, however, pointed out “Sir Syed Ahmad Khan believed in peaceful co-existence and that Hindus and Muslims should form one nation”.

    1. Gordon Campbell, views are not new, this has been expressed by many. Mr Moosa Reza, one of the prominent Civil Servant of Nineties has been working hard on this theory. Even Govt appointed commissions such as Rajendra Sachar Committee in their research not only accepted this, the commission has provided very valuable data base and research to support the agony of Muslims particularly in Northern India.

I believe we Muslims are responsible for our continued exploitations by political class, industrialists, Civil Servants, Law and Order agencies and other Govt depts.

Our Muslim leadership is weak and fragment, biggest problem is unity among our selves. This is due to inadequate eduction and/ or vocational training to make reasonable good living. Strategies by some to destroy home industry also has deep impact on many Muslims in North.

I think best way to take forward is to align our self with main stream, develop good leadership who care for under developed communities. Consider as biggest minority of India and demand for better treatments.

    2. There must not be any surprise if any one behave dfifferently as India is Mainly depend upon to a Hindutwa decision though no one do not dare to declare it but muslims are treated worstly and exposed to be unwanted guests but the Ruling Congress Party simply as vote bank favour verbally us and this is a weak policy which hurted us most since the independance. Now the RSS, VHP, Bajrang dal and its subordinate parties and their dominant inhdividuals in Govt and Police as well as in every govt dept act differently against the rights given in the Constitution of India. According to confirmed reports about 25 percent of muslim population is under siege of police custody or in prison without any trial for years. The court also relieved some cases finding them innocent, but the officers are not punished for this wrong punishment /act. and neither the suspect is receiving any benefit for the long unnecessary sentence suffered. in the Jail custody.
It is also our weakness that some of our big leaders give big dialogues for salvation of educational standard etc. and to bring up our community’s living standard .to the level of other community, but they have to find out the way first, otherwise the existing way also will be blocked.
